Smashbox BB Cream
It's not often I see a band wagon going past, and leap upon it with the kind of gusto I have as for as the much talked about, must have that has become the BB Cream (Beauty Balm, Blemish Balm, Beauty Base or Blemish Base). BB Cream may be kinda new to us in the West, but it has been around, and incredibly popular, in the Asian markets for years, since its development in the 1960's in Germany as a treatment to protect skin after surgery. Asian women prizing the cream's skin-whitening properties (left out in some western formulations).
So BB Creams abound, some are better than others, some claim to do more than others, fighting signs of ageing, acne etc, but all offer that same basic claim that they could be the only cream in your arsenal – offering moisturisation, priming, coverage and sunblock, however most women use BB Creams as a replacement for foundation, over moisturiser (and possibly primer/serum) and under face powder.
In finding the right BB Cream for this article, we have looked at quite a few, and many do the job very well at varying prices, so its worth shopping around because you will find a BB Cream to suit your budget – at the time of writing Rimmel's very good BB Cream was available in selected shops at just £4.99 (RRP £6.99), I liked the price very much, and even though it comes in only two shades, it matched well and was light and silky on, I always used it over moisturiser, as I have dry skin, but it made my skin feel very comfortable, and not dry or tight, even with powder as well.
But the BB Cream we like the most is Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35, it gives great coverage, matches skin tone really well (it comes in five shades), and feels yummy on the skin (technical terminology!!), it works as well as a standalone, as it does with moisturiser under and powder over instead of your foundation. It offers such good skin hydration that when I gingerly tried it without any moisturiser underneath, I was very pleasantly surprised, my skin felt supple and comfortable all day.
Here is what Smashbox say:
"Your new go-to for flawless skin. Just let it BB. So what does BB do?
PRIMES: Wear alone, or under your favourite foundation to create a smooth canvas.
PERFECTS: Tinted formula in 5 shades evens out skin for a flawless finish.
HYDRATES: Improves skin moisture in 4 weeks. Guaranteed.
PROTECTS: SPF 35 guards against UVA/UVB rays.
CONTROLS OIL: Minimizes shine with no chalky finish."
The downside however is the price, it is one of the more expensive BB Creams on the market, so we bravely set out to find the best possible price for a 30 ml tube…. The first hurdle to jump was beating Smashbox's own price of £27.00 with free delivery (and a free sample)! We trawled all our usual sites Boots.com's offering being the same as Smashbox's at £27.00, but even on Amazon and Ebay, we just couldn't beat the £27.00 incl P&P, we came close at about £28.00 on Amazon.
Even the super PopSugar Shopping (formerly ShopStyleUK – not being aged 17, a name I far prefer!) was able to help me out, it gave me sniff of hope promising the BB cream at £24.63, but when I was directed to the Nordstrom site the price was stated as £25.93 (with free delivery), but my hopes were dashed as although the site promises international delivery, it seems that Smashbox BB Cream isn't able to be delivered to the UK! So we failed at the first hurdle, Smashbox really do have a tight leash on their BB Cream, and the best online price goes to…..
£27.00 (including delivery)
