NAME: Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius (born 22 November 1986)
ABOUT: The "Blade Runner", Oscar Pistorius, is a South-African double below-knee amputate, who lost his legs at 11 months old. The Blade Runner took part in this year's London Olympics, but this has not been an easy journey; Pistorious first took part in international competitions for able bodied athletes in 2007, he runs with the aid of Cheetah Flex-Foot carbon fibre transtibial artificial limbs.
His artificial limbs have been a source of controversy with some claiming he has had an unfair advantage over other able-bodied runners, and in the very same year he first competed along side able bodied athletes, the IAAF changed its own competition rules, to ban "any technical device that incorporates springs, wheels or any other element that provides a user with an advantage over another athlete not using such a device" although the IAAF said this amendment was not aimed at Pistorious, in 2008 after monitoring and testing, IAAF scientists took the a view that he did enjoy advantages over other runner without artificial limbs, and on 14 January 2008 he was banned from any competitions conducted under its rules, which included the 2008 Bejing Olympics. But all was not lost and and the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned this decision in time for the Bejing Olympics, unfortunately Pistorious didn’t get to compete in the 2008 games, his best time falling just short of the qualification time. However Pistorious finally got there, achieving the A qualifiying standard for both the 2011 World Championships and the London 2012 Olympics, and at the just finished fabulous London 2012 games, Pistorious ran in the men's 400 metres race and was part of South Africa's 4 × 400 metres relay team, he may not have come close to winning, but it absolutely unmissable, and one of the most enduring moments of the games.
It was in January 2003, that as part of rehabilitation following a knee injury that he was introduced to running and he "never looked back".
For those of us, still wanting more… Pistorious will be competing in the London 2012 Paralympic Games, which start in just a few weeks.
WHAT MAKES HIM RAZBERRY CANDY?: Well apart from the obvious (points to picture!), tenacity and the will to succeed is something that makes someone stand out from the crowd, and Oscar Pistorious has this by the bucket load. His sporting motto is: "You're not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have”, no doubt every single one of us could do with remembering that now and again!
