Razberry Candy – The IT Crowd

This week, we have two for the price of one! Two home grown talents who have gone from starring in Channel 4s utterly brilliant IT Crowd to taking Hollywood, if not exactly by storm, certainly with a decent thump!

NAME: Chris O'Dowd (born 9 October 1979),

ABOUT: Irish Actor O'Dowd is still perhaps best known for his role as Roy in the IT Crowd. O'Dowd was born in Sligo and grew up in County Roscommon, Ireland. He unsuccessfully studied politics and sociology at University College, Dublin, never finishing his degree saying that he just wasn’t able to find an interest in sociology.

Before trotting off to Hollywood and becoming an overnight success and leading man, after landing the role of Nathan Rhodes in the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids, O'Dowd appeared not only in the IT Crowd, but also on Irish television, and in minor roles in many guises. But it really is the IT Crowd, that flung him onto our screens in impressive fashion, playing the rather work-shy Roy, who will go to great lengths to ensure he doesn’t have to do a lot of actual working. Roy is very often either emotionally or physically injured, because despite the fact that next to colleague Moss, Roy appears almost normal, he is still a standard nerd, with all the lack of social understanding and graces that entails!

NAME: Richard Ayoade (born 12 June 1977)

ABOUT: English, actor, writer and director, who is currently best known for his role as Maurice Moss in The IT Crowd. Born in London, and brought up in Ipswich in Suffolk, Ayoade studied at St. Joseph's College in Ipswich, before studying law at St Catharine's College, Cambridge.

Those familiar with Channel 4 comedy will know Ayoade from Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (which he co-wrote with Matthew Holness) and the brilliant Mighty Boosh, but like O'Dowd he become a household face thanks to the IT Crowd.

Since the IT Crowd – Submarine, released in 2010 was Ayoade's debut directorial feature, a coming of age comedy/drama, the film had its premiere at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival in 2010, and Ayoade was nominated for a BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer at the 65th British Academy Film Awards.

Currently Ayoade is appearing on cinema screens starring in the Sci Fi Comedy The Watch, alongside Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn and Jonah Hill. The film follows a group of neighbours who form a suburban neighbourhood watch group after uncovering an alien plot that threatens the world!

But as with O'Dowd, it really was the IT Crowd (written by Father Ted creator Graham Linehan), that ensured Ayoade's is a face most of us know, he played Maurice Moss, an extremely intelligent nerd, with an absolute lack of social skills, Moss lived at home with his mother, who still dressed him. His proudest moment during the IT Crowd and arguably one of the best episodes saw Moss being crowned a Countdown champion and entering a secret shadowy underworld just for those with brains big enough to triumph.

WHAT MAKES THEM BOTH RAZBERRY CANDY?: Both have gone from a dingy basement in Renholm Industries, as super standard nerds to being leading men in Hollywood, home grown success stories will always make it to the candy page! We just miss Roy and Moss, and are currently petitioning for a IT Crowd film!
