Review a frying pan they said!! Use it, try it, be totally honest and write about it they said.
Now in my time I have written about a lot of things, mainly about food granted (it’s my ever abiding obsession), but never before have I been faced with the inanimate and functional object that is a frying pan, with the brief “to write about it”.
I thought I would have to learn about induction cooking, or become a food science expert but as it turns out, I am quite familiar pan frying and experience does count for a lot in matters of the kitchen. So I have kinda eaten my words, as they say (after frying them in my new and rather special frying pan). I’ve found, hands down, the Green Earth Frying Pan by Ozeri really is an exceptional pan.
Like most folks these days I have consigned the butter pat to high days and holidays, ditched the deep fat fryer and have attempted to roast potatoes in low fat ‘gloop’ which promises its health benefits outweigh the absolute lack of taste!
However there are a few things that just have to fried, and my son has a small obsession with omelettes which has led to me getting ever more creative with fillings sneaking in more vegetables each time!
So with my frying pan use credentials intact, I set out trying out and testing this pan. The first thing that strikes you is the weight, you instantly know from the sheer heftiness of it, that it is going to do the job well. What doesn’t become apparent, until you start to use it, is just how evenly it cooks and absolutely and utterly non-stick it is.
The bottom of the pan is textured, which did worry me a little to start with, I was concerned it was going to be Pancake Day 2009 all over again (I forgot to use butter, it wasn’t pretty), but I was entirely wrong, absolutely nothing sticks to the pan!
I know purists will shudder and tut, but I wash my frying pan up after every use, I am unable to bear the thought of tainting my fried egg with the fish fried from the night before, or worse still a remnant from that banana fritter! So yes, a paper towel and a wipe round is best! But sorry in my house it’s a good old fashioned soapy water dunk! And this little doozy of a pan has coped with every single wash and comes up perfectly non-stick.
I haven’t needed to use my metal spatulas, simply because nothing sticks, a quick wiggle and we are away! I have cooked so many omelettes I can flick the wrist and turn em in one toss of the pan (yes, I am showing off – adds nothing to the review!).
In summary – it’s a really very good frying pan! Yes it does what frying pans should do it fries your food! But the fact it is so very non-stick and the heaviness of the base which distributes the heat evenly, means you can cook your food using the absolute minimum amount of oil (including the aforementioned gloop)!!
So because this is a review, here is some technical blurb for you!
