NAME: Raymond 'Ray' Paul Mears
AGE: 48 (born 7 February 1964)
ABOUT: Who needs that other survival chap with the annoying name! Ray is the original and in our humble opinion best!!
Ray Mears is a English survival expert, woodsman, author and TV Presenter, born and bred in Kenley, Greater London and then later the North Downs, he was educated at Reigate Grammar School.
His interest in survival skills and wildlife started early, and unable afford the costs of camping equipment to allow him to sleep out on his nature trails, so he started to set up camp using whatever he could find, and so saw the start of Ray Mears the woodsman.
At the tender age of 19, Mears started his bushcraft company, Woodlore, School of Wilderness Bushcraft and his first book “The Survival Handbook”, was published in 1990.
He is known to most of us, from his TV series' – Ray Mears' Bushcraft, Ray Mears' World of Survival, Extreme Survival, Survival with Ray Mears, Wild Britain with Ray Mears and Ray Mears Goes Walkabout.
Of course for most of us we are more than happy to watch someone else 'roughing it', but for those who would like a more hands on survival experience, Mears runs regular survival and woodsman courses! Teaching both civilian and military students the skills needed to survive the harshest of conditions.
He was, in September 2012, awarded a honorary doctorate from Oxford Brookes University.
A little known and perhaps interesting 'Mears' fact is that in July 2010, he was asked by Northumbria Police to help track fugitive killer Raoul Moat.
WHAT MAKES HIM RAZBERRY CANDY: A man who could survive in any surroundings, with little more than his own urine, a tea bagand a oak tree is most definitely Razberry Candy material.
