Razberry Candy – The Big Bang Theory – Part One

Sheldon and Leonard - big bang theory

We brought you two (Razberry Candy – The IT Crowd), but never before have we dared to bring you the Razberry Candy four overload that is The Big Bang Theory guys! But, calm down and cool your heels we have divided the fantastic four in half and this week are proud to bring you……Johnny Galecki – who plays Leonard Hofstadter and Jim Parsons – who plays Sheldon Cooper!

Eeni meeni miini moh…..let's start with the diminutive Johnny Galecki:

Johnny GaleckiNAME: John Mark "Johnny" Galecki

AGE: 36 (born 30 April 1975)

ABOUT: Johnny was born in Bree, in Belgium, his father (Richard Galecki being a serving member of the US Air Force was stationed in Belgium at the time), although born in Belgium, he was brought up Oak Park, Illinois.

Although he is now most well known for his role as Leonard in the Big Bang Theory, many of us will also remember him in the hit US sitcom Roseanne where he played David Healy the boyfriend of Darlene (incidentally played by Sara Gilbert who has starred as Leslie Winkle in the Big Bang Theory – Sheldon's arch enemy and sometime lover of Leonard). Along the same theme he also appeared, way back in 1991 in one episode of the teen comedy Blossom, and of course Blossom was portrayed by Mayim Bialik who now plays Amy Farrah Fowler (Sheldon's kinda maybe girlfriend); US sitcom land sure does seem to be a small world!!!

If you can remember that far back, Johnny also starred in that pretty awful (IMHO) 1989 film, The National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation playing Russell 'Rusty' Griswold, he also appeared in the first episode of the rather better My Name is Earl.

Johnny is arguably one of those actors who pop up in all kinds of films and TV shows, normally as the “bridesmaid instead of the bride”, he is a great supporting actor, having appeared in many more films than just The National Lampoons. So its great that The Big Bang Theory has given him the chance to shine!

Johnny plays Leonard Leakey Hofstadter Ph.d, Leonard is probably the most well adjusted and almost normal of the geek chic quartet that make up the core of The Big Bang Theory. Leonard is the very long suffering roommate (flat mate) of Sheldon Cooper, he is an experimental physicist, born and raised in New Jersey. Much of Leonard's story lines revolve around the on/off romance between himself and Penny, a struggling actress and waitress at the Cheesecake Factory, (played by Kaley Cuoco) who lives in the apartment across the hall from Leonard and Sheldon (Johnny and Kaley were in a real life relationship for two years, something only revealed once the relationship was over).

For his portrayal of Leonard, Johnny has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award.

Jim ParsonsNAME: James Joseph "Jim" Parsons

AGE: 39 (born March 24, 1973)

ABOUT Jim was born and grew up in Houston, Texas, and it was at the tender age of six, after playing the role of the Kola-Kola bird in a school production of The Elephant's Child, that Jim decided being an actor was the life for him, attending Klein Oak High School in Spring where he acted in many High School productions, after high school Jim headed off to the University of Houston, where again he acted and starred in many plays and productions, honing his skills for what was to come! In 1999 Jim was accepted at the University of San Diego as part of a special course in classical theatre.  Jim loved learning and school but 'finally' graduated in 2001 and moved to New York to find his fortunes in the real world!

His career until the Big Bang Theory followed that of so many actors, crap commercials (he appeared in much 'discussed' 2003 commercial for american toasted sub chain Quiznos – see below) and much loved theatre work. Before the Big Bang Theory, his biggest role to date had been in 2004/5 when he appeared in six episodes of the now finished American drama series Judging Amy.

It has been The Big Bang Theory that has pushed Jim from a successful theatre actor and less successful TV and film actor to the internationally recognised figure that he is now. It is his portrayal of Dr Sheldon Cooper that many people cite as the reason the show's phenomenal success.

Sheldon Lee Cooper, M.A., Ph.D., Sc.D is a theoretical physicist from Galveston, Texas his mother Mary Cooper (another Roseanne link here – played by Laurie Metcalf, who of course played Roseanne's younger sister Jackie on the show) is an extremely devout Evangelical Christian and her attempts to raise her “Shelly” according to her beliefs have been all but unsuccessful, but she remains pretty much the only person to whom Sheldon will defer to!  Sheldon has a twin  sister Missy (played by Courtney Henggele in the show) who is pretty much Sheldon's absolute opposite!

Sheldon was a bullied child prodigy, going to the University of Texas at Austin at the age of eleven, graduating at fourteen and going on at the age of fifteen to work as a visiting professor at the Heidelberg University in Berlin, he received his first Pd.D when he was sixteen.

Sheldon's story lines mainly play around his extreme intelligence alongside his equally extreme lack of social skills, he is annoyingly logical, with a vast superiority complex, however his lack of awareness at quite how annoying he can be and almost childlike qualities mean you can never quite hate him! Sheldon has an IQ of 187, yet likes to be sung to – 'soft kitty warm kitty' – when unwell.

“Bazinga!” the word Sheldon uses after making a usually bad joke has now been officially trademarked by Warner Brothers.

For his portrayal of Sheldon, Jim Cooper has received the Television Critics Association award for the highest individual achievements in comedy, the National Association of Broadcasters Television Chairman's Award for a significant breakthrough in a specific art discipline, a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy and two consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

WHAT MAKES THEM RAZBERRY CANDY?: They are Leonard and Sheldon – nuff said!
